Making money with domains
DNprofits

I can honestly say I know no better business than domain names. That said most people lose money. I’ve known two very intelligent people to go bankrupt from buying domains. The problem isn’t finding decent domain names worth more than reg fee, its selling them. You have one year to sell them, unless your plan is to keep them until they sell. Do you want to renew it for years? Will you keep it for 5 years? Is it worth 500% more than the first year? Will a buyer appear after 5 years?

I’ve had several businesses, and good markups aren’t that common. People hate the idea that maybe there domain isnt worth $3000 after they just grabbed it for $12. That is damn rare, even in domains. In retail you dont get to double on most of your product line. 100,000 .coms drop almost everyday (something like that). Of that list I only want 5, and not sure on one of them, and little chance of two of them. But that isnt my main point, getting them isnt the tough part, finding ones that people want and are willing to pay $100-$1500 or so is tough.

Afternic lists 5 million domains, it is going to be tough for your name to get attention. Sedo has far less, but its still close to 3 million.

The forums arent like they used to be, many are gone, the only strong old pure domain forums have been sold and the pricing has changed it a lot. The big hosting forum, is tough to post. Hopefully thesiteforum.com will get some traction in the coming months. I list at afternic and sedo both, but sales are not as I need. I have a couple of names at atom, they dont have the massive number of names. There are somewhat large number of FB groups, but they are domainers, not end users, and I haven’t seen too many decent sales. Then you have flippa and ebay, neither are great options but they both can work though pricing and the extra work.

I’ll expand on all this more in coming articles, but I stick with my first thought, I think its the best business there is. It takes the right person with a good plan and a GREAT eye, and perhaps a good salesperson.
