Heaven help me finding a pretty good domain I still like. I check for some every morning. I look for names a fair amount of time daily, so much so I need to do so less, as if I count my time, my domains are expensive. Having good domains for sale is all about finding them.
Keep in mind I’ve been doing this for 25 years. I never wanted to get into the bigger value domains (which is where the money is). I still see domains that are dropping daily that I try to register. Just FYI somewhere around 80-120,000 .coms drop everyday, I would say the number runs about 105k on an average day. As you look the the list its a crying shame. Its amazing what has been registered, some seem like a random 7 letters, what people have regged amazes me. You also see a few clear trademark problems. One of the top rules is dont buy a lawsuit buying a name that is surely using a trademarked name. Sellonebay, usefacebook, will get you sued. It seems simple, you cant use canonprinters.com and not expect an email. Most of the times they just say delete the domain. Even if you sell it, even if you have not gotten a letter, the company and/or the buyer can both sue you.
The law basically says they have to protect their trademark. Even things like ilovefordmustangs would be in question. if you used ilovemustangs.com (its for sale on sedo, I think I recognized the landing page). Anyway if the latter was used to show ford mustangs….thats sort of in a gray area. It really is a gray area with a slippery slope.
Okay so at 1:00 central time (US) the drop .coms drop, from1-2. They all likely have a drop time, I know .infos do as I used to buy them. It was some silly AM time, but at the time I was having a little luck selling them, and at the time they were cheap. They will drop right at 1, with the bulk from 1:15 till 1:35 after that they likely are gone. There was only one I even considered yesterday, it just didnt seem sellable, and this morning it remains open. The best names get caught by the drop catching services, then you have people like me that all looking at their leftovers.
For years I’ve used Estibot’s drop list. It gives a pretty good list of the good names dropping on that date. I have 5 I’m thinking about today, in 4 hours. One I likely wont try for as its long and its searches are low. The others have searches of over 3k, all have decent bids as well. They all have clear use. At least one has the .net taken, which isnt surprising as it is the best by a fair amount.
I really try to focus on exact match searched terms, with bids, and a clear internet use hopefully with clear products, something I can sell (or others) or affiliate programs. Of course the more TLD’s that are taken the better but you get too wound up you wont ever find a drop, but perhaps thats a good thing.
Now I look several different ways. And I still mostly like the hunt, but some days not so much. And many of my names they say have zero value. My best sale (which was anything too big) I found and they said it had no value. Its paramount if you want DN profits, you have to decide what you are going to buy, and how you are going to sell it. My names for sale are all over the place, and that an issue I have thought of for a fair time. Not sure a $20 name looks good next to $1000 name and very likely appeals to very different buyers.
